Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women, and the risk rises sharply during and after menopause. In fact, within about 10 years of menopause, a woman’s risk approaches that of men of the same age, making heart health a major concern in midlife.
Menopause hormone therapy (MHT) has been proposed by some researchers and health commentators as protective for the heart. It’s an appealing idea, but the best available evidence does not support it. If MHT truly prevented heart disease, major cardiology societies would recommend it, and The Menopause Society would not have issued a statement specifically advising that MHT is not recommended for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease
