Understanding the different types of estrogen is key to managing menopause and making informed decisions. Many people think of estrogen as a single hormone, but the body actually produces several types, each with its own role and potency. During reproductive years, the main form is estradiol (E2). This is the strongest and most biologically active estrogen. It drives reproductive health, maintains muscle and bone, regulates metabolism, and supports brain and cardiovascular function. After menopause, estradiol levels drop dramatically—from roughly 50–250 pg/mL in premenopause to around 20 pg/mL after menopause—and remain consistently low.
